Sited along Altea’s iconic seafront promenade, Viviendas La Mar stands as a thoughtful exploration of contemporary Mediterranean architecture. This residential project design, completed in 2007, presents a nuanced dialogue between built form and coastal landscape.
The 47,000 m² structure houses 22 units across six stories, its stepped profile creating a cascading effect that echoes the undulating coastline. The facade, a composition in white with brise soleil and terracotta accents, speaks to the region’s architectural vernacular while embracing modern sensibilities.
Floor-to-ceiling glazing dominates the sea-facing elevation, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. Expansive balconies, cantilevered from each floor, extend the living spaces outward, their transparent balustrades maintaining visual continuity with the horizon.
The building’s massing responds to its context, with a solid rear elevation providing privacy from the street, while the front opens generously to the Mediterranean. This duality is further emphasized by the contrast between the intimate, shaded entry sequence and the light-filled, sea-view interiors.
At ground level, a transparent commercial space activates the promenade, integrating the building into the public realm. The underground parking, tucked discreetly below, allows the structure to prioritize its engagement with the beachfront.
